Title: Planning Director

Reporting Structure

1. You report directly to the Business Director.
2. You have a team (Managers/Supervisor) reporting directly to you.
3. You are expected to manage your team as well as any specialist delivery services that are being deployed in your business.

Base of Operation

 Located in Shanghai.

Scope of Assignment

1. Insight and strategy development
2. Account management and implementational planning
3. Trading delivery

These areas will be supported by other specialist services such as trading, research/insight, digital and branded entertainment.

As the deputy to the Business Director on your set of accounts, the Planning Director will play an important role in attaining this ambition.


The assignment encompasses:

1. Effective ownership of the relationships with clients and other agencies
2. The creation of communications plans that build from the core insight developed with the strategist assigned to each individual client
3. The day to day project management of media solutions and to ensure effective and efficient implementation (planning and buying) through the relevant internal or external specialists
4. Effective management of all specialist divisions on your business
5. Business poise and earns confidence of external and internal stakeholders.

Key Client Responsibilities

Manage one of the international FMCG brand

Major focus will be supporting Business Director to drive strategy thinking via consumer insight and tracking data, e.g. sales, awareness. Will work closely with internal as well as client’ research/insight team.

Also spend time on understanding regular operation, in charge of some regular task. So the strategic recommendation can be better integrated with reality.

Key Responsibilities

1. Client relationship management
- Day to day account management leadership
- Be regarded as the one of the account directors for all of the client’s media communication requirements

2. Strategic media development
 Involvement in development of insights & creative communications solutions
 Contribution to and help leadership of planning workshops & ideas generation session

3. Management of the implementational process
- Day to day management of all delivery partners (including Trading Community) to ensure brief is delivered / bought to plan, within appropriate criteria (budget, target).
- Motivate team to create innovative and accurate plans based on agreed strategic direction.
- Upkeep, and timely delivery of all relevant reporting systems and templates (include media plans, contact reports, status reports).
- Management of post campaign reporting that quantifies the value of the media strategy.
- Supervision of the collation of competitive data in agreed formats required.

4. Drive Profitability and Productivity
- Maximise productivity by effectively managing workload and client expectations

5. Managing your team and the specialist relationships
- Internal
- Managing your direct reports, Managers and clear and accurate briefing of them.
- Integration of trading community
- Manage direct reports career path and development plan
- External
- Build effective working relationships with other agency personnel clients research/insight team


Performance Measurement

1. Product-driven measures
- Assistance in creation of the communications ‘idea’ within client portfolio.
- Innovation, creativity and evolution of the media ‘idea’ within the implementational planning (create) phase.

2. Client relationship measures
 Annual agency performance evaluation
 Integration with other teams / units / agencies / third parties.

3. Internal relationship measures
 Performance versus objectives set out in personal annual assessment
 Team personnel career development
 Timely reviews of all direct reports.

Specified requirement
Minimum 5 years experience on communication area, i.e. media or account planning or research, in international company, not limit to advertising agency, in China or other markets in Asia.
Be ready to bring his or her career to a higher level, willing to learn media agency’s operation to enrich his or her own cross functions experiences
Familiar with industry research process and methodology, especially on awareness tracking
Good at driving strategy thinking via consumer insight and tracking data, e.g. sales, awareness
Pays attention to detail
Proactive and outgoing
Good at Chinese listening and speaking

Following experience/skill will be a plus
Experience on retail or FMCG business
Fluent in English writing and speaking
Experience on working with Millward Brown
Experience on client internal research team, focus on advertising effectiveness analysis
